About Dunham House

Located in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, Dunham House supports individuals aged 18 to 65 who are facing addiction and mental health difficulties. The center works with people who struggle with both issues together, including those experiencing alcohol or cocaine dependence. Dunham House offers services in English, so it can assist clients in Quebec who prefer that language. Their structure includes a 30-day intensive program, a 6-month core program, and outpatient programming in Montreal. Clients traveling from outside the area are accepted for the 30-day and 60-day options. For young adults, Dunham House provides tailored programming designed to address major life changes and to help them stay on track in work and school.

Treatment includes a variety of evidence-based approaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, relapse prevention planning, along with creative and experiential therapies like art and music, equine therapy, gardening, and recreational therapy. Together, these methods help clients regulate emotions, recognize patterns behind their behaviors, and build recovery using proven tools over time.

Residents live in semi-private rooms on an 85-acre campus that is quiet and restorative, created to encourage reflection, self-discovery, and healing. The property offers walking trails, a pond, a 7,000-square-foot vegetable garden, a greenhouse, a chicken coop, kayaking, and hiking opportunities. Meals emphasize fresh, garden-to-table cooking and can accommodate different dietary preferences, including vegan and vegetarian options.

Dunham House also provides support for families affected by addiction through a six-week family program. Each session can include up to 10 participants, who explore the stages of addiction and recovery, how addiction affects families and caregivers, and practical skills for communication, boundaries, and understanding family dynamics. The program also covers self-care and rebuilding trust, helping participants better understand what their loved one is experiencing and learn healthier ways to respond as both the individual in addiction and the family member heal.
