Since 1993, Ark House has been providing fully residential rehabilitation based on the 12-Step approach, delivered in a calm, seaside environment. The programme focuses on abstinence and follows a non-religious, person-centred method that is grounded in compassion, dignity, and clinical professionalism. Set in coastal Scarborough in North Yorkshire, Ark House offers a peaceful location within a short walk of both the beach and the town centre. The centre is based in a renovated Edwardian hotel, blending period character with contemporary comfort. With 15 bedrooms, residents benefit from a safe and private setting, including separate floors by gender and rooms arranged to encourage rest, security, and a sense of community. The facility is designed around residents’ emotional, social, and everyday practical needs, with spaces created to support recovery, meaningful connection, and a steady, reassuring atmosphere for long-term change.

Ark House supports people recovering from many types of addiction involving alcohol, drugs, and behavioural issues. Substance problems covered include alcohol; prescription medicines; heroin, methadone, morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl, and other synthetic opioids; cocaine and crack cocaine; amphetamines and methamphetamine; prescription stimulants; cannabis (including “weed” or “marijuana”); synthetic cannabinoids such as Spice; benzodiazepines; LSD; psilocybin mushrooms; mescaline; peyote; DMT; ketamine; ecstasy; and MDMA. They also treat addiction involving multiple substances.

Treatment lengths typically run from 6 weeks to 6 months. Programmes include group therapy, one-to-one counselling with professionals registered with BACP, medication support, mindfulness-based activities, family involvement, and a peer-led therapeutic community. Ark House’s 12-Step framework is guided by Recovery Dynamics® by Joe McQuanty. Day-to-day structure includes recovery assignments, therapy groups, and community responsibilities that help build stability and encourage personal development. The centre combines evidence-based talking therapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), with additional holistic approaches.

While Ark House does not offer detox on site, it coordinates with approved medical services to arrange medically supervised detox elsewhere before admission. Aftercare continues through weekly aftercare groups, a 24/7 helpline, an alumni network, and individual planning sessions, supporting each person as they maintain progress and move toward a healthier life after treatment.
