About CRF Jary Barreto Crisis Center

Jary Barreto Crisis Center, situated in San Diego’s Logan Heights area, is a Short-Term Acute Residential Treatment (START) program that provides a voluntary, more home-like option to psychiatric hospitalization for adults 18 and older facing serious mental health emergencies. The center focuses mainly on mental health needs, and it can also assist people who have substance use disorders alongside other challenges, as long as substance use is not the main concern. Admission requires that clients have medical conditions that are stable and can be managed through outpatient care, and that they choose to follow the program’s requirements. Stays typically average about nine days.

The Jary Barreto Crisis Center offers a wide set of supports, including psychiatric assessments, medication monitoring, individual and group therapy, and training in practical life skills. It also provides integrated treatment for substance use when relevant, along with structured recreational activities and help coordinating discharge planning for ongoing services. Through individualized care in a safe, encouraging setting, the program functions as an effective alternative to inpatient hospitalization. Operated under the Community Research Foundation, the center serves Medi-Cal members and those without insurance, and it does not turn people away due to inability to pay. Services are available in both English and Spanish to ensure greater access.
