The Gathering Place in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is a peer-led recovery center that helps adults and people who are currently unsheltered and living with mental health concerns and substance use issues. The program began in 1996 with support from National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Wisconsin and provides a range of recovery-focused services and events. Among its offerings are peer support groups, SMART Recovery meetings, recovery coaching, learning and educational sessions, wellness activities, and mindfulness-based practices, all aimed at strengthening participants’ progress.
A key feature of The Gathering Place is that it operates entirely on a peer model. The staff and leadership are made up solely of individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges and substance use recovery. This peer-driven, person-centered approach helps create an atmosphere marked by respect and compassion, since team members understand recovery firsthand. Through involvement in the center’s programs, participants are encouraged to build a meaningful and satisfying quality of life, supported by people who have experienced similar journeys.
The Gathering Place also offers an engaging community environment with activities such as arts and crafts, open mic nights, holiday events, cookouts, games, and outings. These events are intended to promote enjoyment, connection, and a strong sense of belonging in a safe, sober setting.
