About Newport Academy
Newport Academy Kirkland uses a whole-person method to support adolescents ages 12 to 18 who are dealing with anxiety, depression, mood-related concerns, and related challenges such as substance use, self-injury, and disordered eating. Through partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP), teens receive both clinical care and academic programming, while the treatment team also involves and supports the full family. The center is located just east of Seattle, and participants can take part in outings to places like Lake Washington and other scenic natural areas nearby.
PHP runs throughout the day, five days each week, and is designed for teens who require a high level of structure and support but do not need residential treatment. Services include individual, group, family, and experiential therapies, along with an accredited school program. The IOP is well-suited for young people who are making steady progress, providing continued help five afternoons a week after school.
Newport Academy focuses on the psychological, physical, social, emotional, and educational aspects of recovery through caring support, clinical skill, and respect for each individual. Staff members use evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and attachment-based family therapy to strengthen the parent-child bond and improve communication. Treatment also includes activities like yoga and meditation, creative outlets through art and music, and outdoor adventure therapy.
Newport’s care model is built to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ teens as well, offering practical strategies to move through everyday life, strengthen self-esteem, and develop healthy connections with peers, mentors, and the wider community. Clinical leaders and support staff are trained to respond to the mental health issues commonly experienced by LGBTQ+ youth. In addition, Newport has partnered with the Trevor Project, a leading LGBTQ+ advocacy and research organization, to deliver specialized training for its staff.
