About Humboldt Recovery Centers - N Street

Humboldt Recovery Center is the largest and longest-running residential program on California’s North Coast, helping people build fulfilling, substance-free lives since 1972. The center offers an evidence-based addiction treatment model using a specialized therapeutic community approach across 7 house locations. The program is organized by gender, and each residence includes a dedicated counselor’s office. Humboldt Recovery Center is licensed and certified by the Department of Health Care Services and can serve up to 57 men and women in its residential setting.

The homes at Humboldt Recovery Center are well maintained, clean, and fully furnished, situated in quiet, safe residential neighborhoods and designed to feel like home. Residents can choose private or shared bedrooms, with space planned for up to two clients per room. Rooms include storage such as closet and dresser space for personal items. Every house has a shower and bathtub, shared living areas with televisions and cable, and telephones available for client use. The center also provides study and reading space, plus computer and internet access to support job, education, and resume preparation. A fully equipped kitchen is available in each home.

Humboldt Recovery Center uses a phased treatment approach intended to gradually increase structure, freedom, and personal responsibility during a 90-day period. After completing residential programming, clients may continue with 9 months of outpatient treatment, along with aftercare supports, for a total program length of about one year.

At the start of treatment, clients complete written assignments focused on the underlying factors that may contribute to substance use. When a client is ready to advance, they submit a written request to the community. After an initial two-week “blackout phase,” the group asks questions and offers recommendations to the counseling team. As clients progress through three or four phases, which typically last from two weeks to one month each depending on their situation, they may be granted more time away from the facility for work, school, or community outings, sometimes with staff or support person supervision.

Across the program, Humboldt Recovery Center supports a range of needs, including marriage and family counseling, parenting education, help with vocational or educational goals, medical services, treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions, and assistance with housing and transportation barriers.

Residents who are physically able and making strong recovery progress are encouraged to pursue employment. Addiction counselors provide vocational guidance, and the center has many connections within the local business community that can support job placement. Educational programming helps clients improve literacy, work toward a GED, complete school requirements, pursue college, and gain job-related training.

Health and wellness are emphasized throughout treatment, including on-site fitness facilities and nutritional counseling. Meals are provided with a focus on healthy options. Medication-assisted treatment may be used with non-narcotic medications, which can be prescribed by a physician or psychiatrist and taken under supervision. The center also helps clients arrange any needed medical or dental care. Clients are encouraged to rebuild relationships with their children and families, who are able to visit often and participate in outings and shared meals.

Drug and alcohol testing is required and can be random at least three times per week for residential clients, including those involved with the alumni association.

After completing residential phases, Humboldt Recovery Center provides ongoing aftercare through a free 9-month program for residents. After discharge, clients move into the alumni association, which offers aftercare counseling and opportunities for sober social and recreational activities. The alumni association meets weekly, with two group support meetings each week.
