Humboldt Recovery Center is the largest and longest-running residential treatment program on California’s North Coast, helping people build lasting, drug-free lives since 1972. The center delivers an evidence-based addiction program built around a structured therapeutic community model across seven house locations. Each location serves one gender and includes a counselor’s office. The program is licensed and certified by the Department of Health Care Services and can treat up to 57 men and women in residential care.
The houses at Humboldt Recovery Center are clean, well kept, and fully furnished, situated in secure residential neighborhoods that feel like home. Clients can choose private or shared bedrooms, with space for up to two clients per room and storage that includes closets and dressers. Every home has access to a shower and bathtub, televisions in shared areas with cable, phones for client use, and dedicated space for reading and studying. Residents also have computer and internet access to support work, education, or resume development, along with a fully equipped kitchen.
Humboldt Recovery uses a step-up approach over a 90-day residential stay, gradually increasing clients’ privileges and responsibilities. After completing residential treatment, participants may join a nine-month outpatient program with continuing aftercare support.
At the start of treatment, clients receive writing tasks that focus on underlying factors that may contribute to substance use. When ready to move forward, clients submit a written request to the community. After an initial two-week blackout phase, the community asks questions and then offers guidance to counseling staff. Clients progress through three or four phases based on their needs, usually spending about two weeks to one month in each phase, which also allows more opportunities to be away from the facility for activities such as work, school, or planned outings, sometimes with supervision or a support person.
Programming at Humboldt Recovery Center addresses a range of needs, including relationship and family issues, parenting education, help with vocational or academic goals, medical services, co-occurring mental health concerns, and practical challenges related to housing and transportation.
Clients who are physically able and showing strong progress are encouraged to pursue employment. Counselors provide job-related support, and the center has built relationships with local businesses to assist with job placement. Educational programming helps clients learn to read, work toward a GED, complete or enter college, and build job-ready skills.
Wellness is emphasized throughout treatment, including on-site fitness facilities and nutrition counseling, with healthy meals served regularly. Medication-assisted treatment is available using non-narcotic medications that may be prescribed by a physician or psychiatrist and taken under supervision. The center also helps connect clients with medical and dental care as needed. Family involvement is supported as well, with frequent visits and opportunities for children and family members to attend outings and meals.
Residential clients undergo mandatory and random drug and alcohol testing at least three times per week, and alumni association participants are also tested.
Humboldt Recovery Center provides aftercare through a nine-month program that is free for individuals in residential treatment. After finishing the residential phases, clients enter the alumni association, which offers aftercare counseling and sober social and recreational activities. The alumni association meets weekly, with additional group support meetings held twice each week.
Also confirm the facility is licensed by Ohio. If you are withdrawing from alcohol or benzodiazepines, ask about medical detox; do not stop suddenly on your own.
Humboldt Recovery Centers - 10th Street did not report which payment types it accepts. If you have Medicaid, ask whether the facility accepts your Ohio Medicaid plan or can refer you to one that does.
