About Winds of Change

Situated close to the Clark Fork River and W Broadway Street in Missoula, Winds of Change Mental Health Center is an outpatient program focused on supporting people through case management, community-based services, counseling, medication oversight, and life skills development for both adults and children dealing with mental health and substance use challenges. In addition, Winds of Change provides group home residential support for adults as a short-term option intended to promote safety, stability, and progress. Winds of Change works in partnership with the Wellness Institute of Montana and takes Medicaid for many of its services.

Every person receiving services is supported by a case manager and a peer support specialist, along with a therapist, and some clients also receive help from psychiatric staff for medication management. Individual counseling, available in person or through video sessions, assists clients in recognizing patterns in thoughts and behavior, choosing goals, and putting new strategies into practice. For substance use and gambling concerns, the center offers addiction-related assessments and interventions, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Participants also receive life skills training, such as budgeting and financial management, and case managers help with locating housing and pursuing work and education opportunities. The center also runs evening anger management classes that are recognized by the courts and teach participants to notice anger sooner and respond with calmer communication. Additional programs include groups focused on relationships, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), driver education, and illness management.

Winds of Change also provides care for children ages 5 to 18 who are experiencing mental health and substance use difficulties. Therapists may use approaches such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), solution-focused therapy, and other evidence-based methods, coordinated with case workers who advocate for children, support goal-setting, and connect families to the resources they need.
