About Emmanuel House

Located in Detroit, this faith-based nonprofit residential center provides support to homeless men who are veterans and are dealing with substance use and mental health concerns. The services include transitional housing, a recovery-focused program, and emergency shelter. Residents are helped with finding work, improving their resumes, strengthening interview skills, and getting transportation to job opportunities. The center coordinates closely with the VA to make sure each person receives reliable care, housing assistance, and a steady route toward long-term stability.

The program follows a structured, evidence-informed model based on 12-step recovery, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and psychoeducation. Participants take part in daily group sessions, life skills workshops, and one-on-one counseling. On-site nurses manage medications and work with mental health professionals to support effective treatment. Each resident partners with a case manager to identify goals, develop practical living skills, and manage co-occurring issues related to substance use and mental health.

Residents stay in a drug-free, semi-independent environment with shared bedrooms, meals provided on site, and access to faith-based resources. The main campus is housed in a renovated stone church, and additional homes in Detroit are available for those preparing for a greater level of independence. Available supports include peer mentoring, services for family members, transportation to work and appointments, and group activities designed to encourage healing, personal growth, and community connection.

Across Detroit, the center offers transitional, recovery, and emergency housing. It provides 70 transitional beds, 20 recovery beds, and 20 emergency shelter beds to assist veterans at different points in their recovery journey.
