About Youth and Shelter Services
YSS - Iowa Homeless Youth Center (IHYC) is a support facility for teens facing homelessness, as well as mental health and substance use challenges. For more than 45 years, YSS has been offering education, counseling, and housing support to adolescents and families who need help. The Youth Homeless Center is focused on ending youth homelessness across Iowa by connecting young people with the tools and assistance they need to build independence and interrupt generational poverty.
IHYC provides targeted mental health counseling so adolescents can access the care necessary for long-term stability and self-sufficiency. The center also includes case managers who help youth work toward educational goals, offering supports such as tutoring, help with financial aid, and referrals to other helpful resources. YSS’s Ember Recovery addiction treatment program delivers evidence-based approaches combined with individualized planning, helping young people learn constructive relapse prevention skills. Through gender-responsive practices, involvement of families, and a welcoming, comfortable setting, participants are supported throughout every step of the recovery process.
IHYC offers a broad range of services designed to assist adolescents experiencing homelessness, regardless of their current stage of recovery or readiness to accept support. The center includes nine emergency beds and also coordinates off-site apartments for young adults who need safe, structured housing. Additional drop-in options include showers, laundry support, hygiene products, free meals, employment assistance, and other resource referrals.
