About Newport Institute

Newport Academy’s OCD program focuses on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and closely related anxiety conditions such as agoraphobia, panic disorders, social anxiety, and trichotillomania. Individuals ages 18 to 35 live in gender-specific residences and receive academic assistance throughout care, including support through a Learning Lab and guidance from an on-staff tutor. Newport Institute also includes the family in the recovery process, offering family therapy and maintaining ongoing communication to help loved ones heal together.

At Newport Institute, OCD care centers on exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy. This approach gradually introduces clients to triggering situations while helping them modify compulsive reactions. Young adults participate in ERP for about 4.5 hours each day, five days per week. Sessions are delivered in both group and individual formats, and clients are assigned additional practice tasks to complete independently. Alongside ERP, treatment incorporates established therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Structured experiential options including horticulture, creative, and adventure-based therapies support emotional regulation and strengthen coping skills.

Newport Institute’s clinical team includes psychiatrists, family therapists, nurse practitioners, counselors, art and music therapists, dieticians, and adventure therapists. A first psychiatric assessment helps shape the care plan and may identify medications that can reduce symptoms. Young adults and their parents also receive psychoeducation about OCD and participate in family-focused treatment designed to promote healing as a whole.

To support long-term progress, Newport Institute offers in-person educational resources through a fully equipped learning environment and dedicated tutors. Tutors assist young adults with maintaining momentum in their academic work, preparing for college, and developing career-related abilities. Built on compassion and care, Newport Institute continually evaluates its methods through research and ongoing outcome studies.
