About Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute

Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, a part of the psychiatry department at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), offers structured care for mental health needs. Services include residential treatment, day treatment, and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs. The institute belongs to the Association for Ambulatory Behavioral Healthcare and holds Joint Commission accreditation. Staff are available on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to answer questions.

Residential treatment typically lasts about 8 days. The goal is to reduce and stabilize severe symptoms first, and then transition patients to an intensive outpatient program or a partial hospitalization option when appropriate.

The day treatment program is designed as an alternative to residential care or as a “step down” after it. It runs for about two weeks on weekdays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and includes structured group sessions, opportunities for individual counseling, and lunch. The day begins with a psychotherapy group that combines a mindfulness component, practice of skills, and a brief check-in. After day treatment, patients may continue with intensive outpatient services. The IOP schedule is held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for roughly six weeks, with session times either from 9 a.m. to noon or from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Group topics focus on mental health concerns. On Fridays, sessions often emphasize reviewing the week’s progress and planning for the upcoming weekend. During individual sessions, the institute encourages addressing co-occurring issues such as substance use and trauma.

Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute also provides electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric disorders. Treatments are usually scheduled three mornings per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and may involve 6 to 15 sessions, with each session lasting about three hours. After ECT, patients are required to have a friend or family member pick them up.

The institute is located within UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion. The residential program includes 30 beds, available in both private and shared rooms.

Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute advises regular follow-up with a psychiatrist or therapist. Clients can access treatment notes through the MyChart app, and they can also buy printed copies of the notes.
