About Newport Academy

Newport Academy’s Southern California programs are designed to support teenagers in every aspect of life: mind, body, and spirit. The center provides care for substance use disorders as well as mental health conditions that occur at the same time, and it also brings families into the recovery process to improve long-term outcomes. Newport Academy was founded by Jim Monroe and Jamison Monroe Jr., a father-and-son team who created the program to support others facing the challenges their own family experienced. What began with one vision has since grown into locations throughout the United States.

Treatment starts with a structured assessment that helps identify each teen’s specific needs and appropriate level of care. After that, a personalized treatment team is assembled, typically including counselors, nurses, a psychiatrist, and a dietitian, and it continues to adjust support as the teen progresses. Newport Academy uses attachment-based family therapy (ABFT) to strengthen family bonds and improve communication. Individual counseling and group therapy help teens better understand themselves, relate to peers in healthy ways, and build a sense of community that extends beyond the treatment program to include family support.

Each teen’s plan is tailored and may include therapies such as equine therapy, music and art programming, yoga, meditation, and adventure-based activities, along with a range of evidence-based clinical approaches. Horticulture therapy supports outdoor time and helps teens apply their skills through meaningful work in the academy’s gardens. For added flexibility, Newport Academy also offers outpatient options and day school programming for those who need a less intensive schedule. The Southern California locations help keep teens near nature, supporting both privacy and a more restorative treatment environment.

Newport Academy also focuses on keeping students connected to education through tutoring and individualized school services. On-site educators coordinate academic progress with therapeutic goals, helping teens learn in a structured and supportive setting. Newport Academy in Southern California is accredited by The Joint Commission and is accepted by most private insurance plans.
