Newport Academy Costa Mesa uses a whole-person approach to helping young people heal, serving children ages 7-11 and teens 12-18 who are dealing with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and related concerns such as substance use, self-harm, and eating-related difficulties. Through partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP), the center offers both clinical treatment and academic support, with services designed to involve and strengthen the entire family. Located close to Costa Mesa’s arts scene and the region’s coastal parks, canyons, and beaches, it also incorporates adventure therapy in its programming.
Programming is offered throughout the day, five days a week. The PHP option is built for clients who need a high level of structure and support but are not ready for residential care. It combines individual, group, family, and experiential therapy, alongside an accredited school program. The IOP is a strong fit for youth who are making steady progress, providing ongoing guidance five afternoons each week after school.
Care at Newport Academy Costa Mesa focuses on psychological, physical, social, emotional, and educational needs through compassionate, evidence-informed treatment and deep commitment to each client. Clinicians are trained in science-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and attachment-based family therapy, with an emphasis on repairing the parent-child connection and improving communication. Students also participate in yoga, meditation, and creative outlets like art and music, plus outdoor adventure therapy. For younger children, the center provides programming that may include sensory rooms, play therapy, and other developmentally appropriate approaches.
Newport Academy also tailors treatment for LGBTQ+ youth, helping them build practical skills for navigating daily life, strengthen self-esteem, and develop healthier relationships with peers, mentors, and the community. Their clinical team and care staff are experienced in addressing the mental health pressures LGBTQ+ young people may face. The center has also partnered with the Trevor Project, a leading LGBTQ+ advocacy and research organization, to deliver specialized training for staff.
