About John Muir Health

Located in the inner Bay Area, John Muir Health provides behavioral health services through day treatment and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for children ages 4 and up, adolescents, and adults. The center accepts clients both voluntarily and through involuntary admission, while also aiming to allow as much freedom of movement during the stay as possible. A psychiatric team coordinates with outside medical professionals, and clients may choose to involve a chaplain as part of their support.

The outpatient services are designed for people who have already completed a residential program or an emergency hospital stay. Treatment differs by age group, with separate programming pathways for adolescents and adults. For clients under 18, John Muir places extra emphasis on family therapy and collaborates with schools so that education can continue while treatment is ongoing. Families and guardians join a weekly support group held from 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

John Muir Health’s behavioral health program supports treatment for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression (including postpartum depression), bipolar disorder, ADHD, anger issues, eating disorders, grief, mood swings, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosis, self-harm and suicidal thoughts, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, trauma, and co-occurring alcohol and drug addiction, among others.

The program can also offer a harm-reduction model for substance use that prioritizes support for the individual’s main mental health needs.

Clients can use MyChart to review care notes during and after treatment and to pay for services. John Muir shares good-faith cost estimates through MyChart and provides an option to dispute charges that are $400 or more higher than expected.
