About John Muir Health

Located in the inner Bay Area, John Muir Health operates a hospital unit with 73 beds dedicated to inpatient behavioral health services for children ages 4 and up, teens, and adults. Patients may be admitted either voluntarily or involuntarily, and the facility aims to give clients as much freedom of movement as possible throughout their stay. The psychiatric staff collaborates with external medical providers, and clients have the option to involve a chaplain.

The care program is structured differently depending on age groups: children 4–11, adolescents 12–13 to 17, and adults 18+. For those under 18, John Muir places strong emphasis on family therapy and works with schools so clients can keep up with their education while in treatment.

Once clients finish the 5–7 day inpatient program, John Muir can transition them to a nearby outpatient treatment center or another appropriate facility.

John Muir Health’s behavioral health services cover a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression (including postpartum depression), bipolar disorder, ADHD, anger issues, eating disorders, grief, mood instability, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosis, self-harm and suicidal thoughts, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, trauma, co-occurring substance use disorders, and more.

For substance-related treatment, John Muir offers a harm-reduction model that prioritizes support for clients’ main mental health needs.

Before admission, John Muir requests that clients bring a driver’s license or other photo ID, an insurance card, $5–$10 in cash, a list of medications, and a small bag or carry-on suitcase. They should also pack alcohol-free toiletries and hair care products, along with clothing for two days.

Clients are instructed not to bring electronics, credit cards, large sums of money, hair dryers, curling irons, flat irons, products containing alcohol, over-the-counter medications, or books. Cell phones may be used only to look up contact information and for no other purpose.

John Muir provides access to MyChart so clients can review care notes during and after treatment and also make payments. The center shares estimates in good faith through MyChart and allows clients to dispute bills that are $400 or more higher than expected.
