HIR Wellness Institute is a women- and survivor-led organization that offers no-cost, culturally grounded mental health and wellness support to Indigenous and underserved communities. Their services prioritize women and girls, while also providing care and resources for men and boys. Many people they serve have faced sexual violence, domestic abuse, human trafficking, or the effects of historical trauma. The center’s care approach includes counseling, advocacy, and community-based programs, guided by Indigenous principles and the CAM™ (Community Activated Medicine) framework.
HIR Wellness brings together Indigenous healing traditions with occupational therapy, sound-based healing, and art therapy. Child-focused initiatives such as S.P.A.C.E. for Kids™ use sensory play to help children recognize feelings and strengthen resilience. For elders, the center provides activities like stretching and support for home safety, along with Peacemaker Massage to encourage comfort and well-being. This whole-person model is designed to support healing in the mind, body, heart, and spirit, benefiting individuals and families across generations.
The programs at HIR Wellness are designed to integrate cultural practices with therapeutic assistance. Story Menders™ helps young people work through emotions and build confidence through role-playing games. The Elders Book Club offers a supportive setting for sharing experiences and addressing historical trauma. Programs such as Daughters of Tradition and Sons of Tradition promote wellness and leadership among Indigenous youth, strengthening cultural identity and connections within the community.
Because services are provided free of charge, HIR Wellness reduces financial barriers to mental health care. The institute also offers virtual mental health services to improve access. In addition, the CAM™ Advanced Training Clinic supports the education of future mental health professionals, helping ensure that services reflect both clinical knowledge and cultural understanding. Overall, HIR Wellness fosters long-term, community-led healing.
