About 10 miles west of Spokane, on what used to be a military missile base, the Adult and Teen Challenge Spokane Men’s Campus provides a Christ-centered approach to treatment for men dealing with substance use. David Wilkerson founded Adult and Teen Challenge in 1960, and today it includes nearly 250 centers in the United States and more than 1,000 centers in 95 countries worldwide. In the Pacific Northwest, programs require a $500 fee at intake, with no additional monthly charges for the rest of the program. The Spokane Men’s Campus runs for one year and can accommodate up to 50 men.
The center’s Bible-based curriculum is built around three key recovery outcomes: addressing the damage and brokenness linked to substance use, restoring relationships through reconciliation with Jesus Christ and others, and bringing about life change grounded in Jesus Christ. During the program, participants attend sermons and take part in Bible study, prayer, spiritual retreats, and vocational training. The program does not have medical personnel, so individuals must complete detox before entering. To keep attention on recovery, contact is limited to immediate family, and electronic devices are not permitted. In support of recovery from all substance use, smoking is prohibited.
