In 2014 John Volken Academy received the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award for its effective, life-changing approach to addiction care. The center delivers highly structured, individualized support across three residential campuses. The Washington State program serves men ages 19 to 44 who are dealing with substance use disorders and addiction alongside co-occurring mental health challenges, using a 24-month therapeutic community model.
Set near Seattle among the scenic views of Mount Rainier in the Pacific Northwest, clients, often called students, live in a calm, nature-filled setting designed to encourage healing and stability. The therapeutic community model blends a range of research-informed treatment strategies with vocational training and practical life skills development. Because students gradually take on greater responsibility within their peer community, they gain chances to practice and apply what they learn throughout the program.
Daily programming follows a consistent structure, with therapeutic activities offered in both individual and group formats for three hours each day, five days per week. Students may also pursue education and strengthen vocational abilities by working in jobs connected to a nearby furniture and home store operated by JVA. This real-world career development helps students turn their abilities into employment-ready skills. They may also assist with meal preparation, serving, cleanup, and other household and outdoor responsibilities that build confidence, accountability, and a sense of achievement. Treatment plans may also include adventure outings, recreation, physical fitness, art, and other therapeutic experiences tailored to individual needs.
A major emphasis of the two-year residential program is preparing residents for long-term sobriety. The program is organized into four phases. The first phase targets the underlying causes and harmful patterns that drive substance abuse through intensive therapy. The second phase supports brain healing by providing a stable environment, the right conditions, and a period of abstinence to help the brain begin rewiring and function more effectively. In the third phase, clients learn to build a healthier lifestyle as they continue healing and reconnect with themselves. The fourth phase focuses on re-entry support and establishing a strong base for a successful life in sobriety after treatment.
John Volken Academy also provides aftercare and alumni support that includes transitional services, relapse prevention, and re-entry planning. As students approach graduation, they are offered a re-entry program and matched with a mentor to learn key skills such as managing finances, preparing resumes, applying for and interviewing for jobs, and other essential tools to support a successful transition. For those who want a smoother adjustment, the center offers affordable transitional housing near campus.
