The Barry Robinson Center offers care for boys and girls ages 6–17, focusing on mental health support. The program includes services for teens who need help with both mental health challenges and substance abuse through a dual diagnosis track. In addition, the center provides community-based options, such as a treatment foster care program and ABA services.
The Barry Robinson Center is known for its compassionate and understanding approach to children and adolescents from military-connected families. Because many of the staff at Barry Robinson have served in the military, the program often feels especially familiar and supportive to residents and their families. The center also promotes a whole-person healing environment for young people and their caregivers. A strong relationship between residents and staff helps power the overall program, while shared experiences among many participants make it easier for them to connect with one another. Plans and therapeutic services are tailored to each individual’s needs, including matching residents with a therapist who fits the specific area of concern.
Barry Robinson employs a range of licensed professionals, including social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, recreational therapists, and music and art therapists. Residents may participate in a variety of treatments such as individual therapy, group sessions, medication management, family counseling, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and recreation therapy. Skill-building and coping strategies are reinforced through structured activities like painting, choir, and caring for a horse.
The residential treatment campus is based in Norfolk, Virginia, and the program typically runs for 4–6 months. Youth live in dorm-style rooms with colorful wall murals and access to comfortable shared spaces. Set on a 32-acre campus, the setting is designed to be safe and calm, giving families and young people the support they need to address emotional and behavioral challenges.
