About Huntsman Mental Health Institute
Located within the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, the Huntsman Mental Health Institute delivers inpatient and outpatient services for people of all ages, supporting a broad spectrum of mental health and substance use needs. Huntsman provides targeted programs for issues such as autism, anxiety, and perinatal mental health. The center is convenient to reach using the 223 bus route, and there is parking available on-site.
Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary group that includes psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, and social workers. Together, they provide crisis-focused treatment for individuals of all ages, with stabilizing inpatient care that generally lasts about 8 to 10 days. Huntsman Mental Health Institute also runs specialized residential programming for teens dealing with mental health and substance use concerns, featuring expressive arts therapy, recreational therapy, medication management, and individualized, group, and family psychotherapy. For substance use, the institute offers medically supervised inpatient detox, staffed by the same professional team to help manage the withdrawal period safely and comfortably.
The Huntsman Comprehensive Assessment & Treatment (CAT) programs provide children, teens, and young adults with a structured 5- to 8-week program aimed at identifying underlying causes of mental and behavioral challenges. Built around acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), the program creates a supportive environment and includes dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skill-building to assist adolescents during recovery. Participants and families benefit from daily access to a child and adolescent psychiatrist, full multidisciplinary evaluations, and personalized evidence-based care that helps set a clear course for long-term well-being.
For those who do not require inpatient care, outpatient services at Huntsman combine medication management with group and individual therapy. The institute also offers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), ketamine therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for mood disorders that do not respond to other treatments. People facing substance use challenges can join an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that uses a group approach to deliver cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational enhancement, mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is available as well to help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
