San Antonio Recovery Center (SARC) is a standalone program for people seeking help with drug and alcohol addiction. In the afternoon, following lunch, assigned chores, and scheduled smoke breaks, the day typically includes relapse prevention, wellness-focused dinner, step and big book study, and scheduled outside Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group meetings, followed by individual time. One of the most valued members of the SARC team is Lacy, a rescue dog and recovery support companion. Lacy’s background echoes the experiences of many people who come to SARC for help. SARC shares, “When Harvey hit, Lacy was homeless and living on the streets. Thankfully, Lacy was rescued and brought to shelter during the storm. After the hurricane, search efforts continued until Lacy could find a safe place to live. After more than 100 families applied to adopt her, Lacy chose her forever home at San Antonio Recovery Center.” Since joining the program, Lacy has positively influenced both clients and staff. She completed her recovery support dog training and is now an important part of the animal-assisted therapy provided at SARC.
