Wake Monarch Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina is a recovery-focused high school created for teenagers ages 13 to 21 dealing with substance use disorders. The school provides a college-preparatory curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12, combining strong academic instruction with recovery-based support. With this structure, students are able to work toward academic, personal, and career goals while learning in a safe, encouraging setting.
Wake Monarch Academy’s goal is to maintain an environment centered on recovery, helping students succeed academically while protecting their commitment to sobriety. The school is grounded in the principles of community, accountability, acceptance, education, and placing recovery first. The academy emphasizes that recovery grows best within a supportive community, where students build meaningful peer relationships that strengthen empathy, honesty, and shared responsibility.
Founded by Leah Wright, a retired educator who was driven by her own experience supporting her son through substance use challenges, Wake Monarch Academy opened in August 2021 as the first recovery high school in the Triangle area. The school functions as a non-profit and covers its expenses through tuition, fundraising activities, and donations. It also provides volunteer opportunities and guidance for families impacted by adolescent substance use disorders.
