About Staten Island YMCA Counseling Service
Since 1980, the YMCA of Greater New York has been delivering a wide range of services to residents of Staten Island. Its Counseling Service supports entire families and provides programs for young children ages 5 to 17, teens ages 12 to 18, and adults 18 and older.
The center works with everyone affected by alcohol or drug use, using evidence-based approaches to collaborate with families throughout the recovery process. For young people, the program helps children understand that their family member’s addiction is not their fault and teaches them healthy ways to think about, manage, and cope with what they are experiencing. The YMCA also applies age-appropriate techniques to reduce risk factors while strengthening protective factors.
For teens, the substance use recovery services focus on youth who are considered “at-risk” for developing a substance use disorder, as well as teens who are already using drugs and/or alcohol. Support is designed to help teens identify personal strengths and develop the skills needed to succeed in school and reach their full potential.
The YMCA Counseling Service includes a variety of specialized options tailored to each person’s needs, including prevention and early intervention programs, teen anger management, medication-assisted treatment, peer support, trauma services, a women’s group, parenting skills education, drug checking kits, and additional resources.
