About Embark Behavioral Health

Embark at Independence provides short-term residential care in a calm, supportive setting for adolescent boys and girls who are dealing with mental health challenges and addiction. The program focuses on dual diagnosis, using proven treatment approaches alongside hands-on therapies and outdoor experiences. This holistic model is designed to treat the whole person by addressing both substance use and co-occurring mental health needs.

Within the inpatient program, Embark at Independence uses a range of clinical services to support healing and recovery, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), substance abuse education and counseling, and recovery-focused group sessions. Treatment is delivered in a structured environment with daily routines that encourage healthy living, including individual and group therapy, physical activity, time outdoors, and nutritious meals. Family therapy is also included to help adolescents build confidence, strengthen social-emotional skills, and improve family relationships. The center commonly supports teens facing issues such as school refusal, addiction, anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, borderline personality disorder (BPD), family conflict, and self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

The residential setting is designed to give patients access to nature and a variety of therapeutic and social activities. Residents may take part in group projects, talent showcases, trivia and game nights, and movie events. With grounds near the Missouri River, patients can enjoy a wide selection of outdoor and fitness-based activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, camping, fishing, archery, frisbee golf, and swimming. Embark at Independence also offers educational and skill-building opportunities through cultural events, as well as culinary, automotive, and trade-focused classes. To support spiritual and emotional wellness, the center provides music instruction, arts and crafts, spiritual retreats, and practices related to meditation and mindfulness.

In addition, Embark at Independence organizes off-site trips to nearby Kansas City for patients and their families, called parent weekends. These trips may include activities like a 5K color run, talent shows, and Kansas City Royals baseball games. The goal of these outings is to apply program skills in real-life situations while learning healthier ways to participate in everyday life and reinforcing stronger family connections.
