About Lakeside Academy

Lakeside Academy is a program that operates as a branch of MN Adult and Teen Challenge. It serves male teens ages 14 to 18 who have been moving toward harmful choices, often linked to substance use and long-standing behavioral challenges. The center provides a structured behavioral rehabilitation approach that includes counseling for substance use dependence and access to medical services. Education is available both in-person and through online learning. The program also emphasizes project-based learning and integrates the Christian faith throughout daily activities. Insurance is accepted for behavioral and mental health counseling, though it does not cover the therapeutic boarding school component.

Upon arrival at Lakeside Academy, each teen completes a detailed one-on-one assessment to identify key issues and to set individualized goals. In the first stage, the boys focus on learning about God’s love and building meaningful therapeutic relationships with the on-site clinicians. The second phase centers on reflecting on the part they played in their poor decisions, encouraging honesty with themselves and deeper work on character development with counselors. In the third phase, the boys work on making amends with family members and friends, while strengthening consistency in their improved behavior. The final stage includes creating personal goals for returning home and joining relapse prevention counseling. Altogether, the program typically lasts between 6 and 12 months, depending on each teen’s progress. Throughout treatment, the boys attend school nearby and continue project-based learning on campus. Training and skill-building include options such as welding, vehicle repair, gardening, grounds and property maintenance, animal care, woodworking, and more.
