About Sandstone Care

Sandstone Care in Rockville, Maryland offers treatment for substance use disorders and mental health challenges for teens ages 13–17 and young adults ages 18–30. The center provides evidence-based, developmentally appropriate care designed to respond to the different needs of each age group. Care options include a day treatment program and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that are located conveniently in the Washington, D.C. area. Clients may also choose to move into nearby gender-specific sober living homes.

At Sandstone Care, the therapist-to-client ratio is 1:8, supporting individualized treatment for clients and involving their families in the process. The outpatient programs address addiction as well as co-occurring concerns such as depression, trauma, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Across levels of care, participants receive 1:1 therapy, group therapy, structured group activities, and psychoeducation. Treatment commonly includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). The program also incorporates holistic approaches such as mindfulness, art and music therapy, and nutritional counseling.

The day treatment program offers 5 hours of therapy each day, five days per week, and often runs about 4 weeks, though length can vary based on individual needs. After completing day treatment, clients are encouraged to transition to the intensive outpatient program (IOP), which typically provides about 12 hours of weekly programming over 3–4 days. Adolescents and young adults also receive academic and vocational guidance from a dedicated advisor who assists with school planning, job searching, and exploring career options. Medication-assisted treatment is used when appropriate to help manage mental health conditions.

Sandstone Care brings together licensed clinicians, medical staff, therapists, and academic support professionals, coordinating regularly with parents and other loved ones. Families can participate in weekly multi-family groups for support and shared learning. In addition, biweekly individual family therapy sessions help families better understand addiction and dual diagnoses, develop recovery skills, set boundaries, and strengthen healthy communication and emotional expression. After treatment, clients continue through an active alumni community that meets regularly and helps connect them with community resources.
