Safe Journey House is a residential therapeutic program intended to provide an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization and, when possible, to reduce the length of inpatient treatment. It assists people who are going through mental health crises by offering short-term support with round-the-clock access to licensed mental health professionals and psychiatrists. The primary purpose of the program is to address urgent issues quickly and lower the risk of similar crises later. To do this, it offers two service levels, including options that help avoid inpatient admission and options that serve as an alternative if inpatient care is being considered.
The center emphasizes strengthening clients’ personal support networks and building on their existing abilities to support recovery. During the first 72 hours, residents work with the team to develop an individualized Crisis Prevention Plan. This plan is designed to help identify warning signs and triggers, and to outline practical steps for responding early if another crisis develops. In addition to crisis-focused counseling, Safe Journey House helps coordinate access to community resources, including help with finances, education, social support, medical services, and mental health care.
Clients also receive guidance aimed at either returning to their prior living arrangements or moving to new housing that better fits their needs. Overall, the program blends clinical treatment with individualized planning and community connections to support stability, improve coping, and manage potential future crises.
Also confirm the facility is licensed by Maryland. If you are withdrawing from alcohol or benzodiazepines, ask about medical detox; do not stop suddenly on your own.
Safe Journey House reports accepting Medicaid, Medicare. With Maryland Medicaid, treatment is usually covered at little or no cost, though some levels of care need prior authorization. Most private plans must cover substance use treatment on terms comparable to other medical care under federal parity law.
