About Sheppard Pratt

Sheppard Pratt supports young adults, working professionals who are at a turning point, and adults dealing with events that can change life. The program is designed for people struggling with substance use and with mental health concerns that occur at the same time. The center focuses on treatment that is grounded in evidence, including approaches that address both mind and body. Along with a detailed mental health assessment, every resident receives a formal diagnostic process and a psychiatric consultation throughout their stay.

Therapies available at Sheppard Pratt include individual psychotherapy, group sessions, family therapy, DBT, medication-related psychiatric support, and psychodynamic therapy. The center also offers a range of holistic and experiential options and activities such as rock climbing, yoga, art therapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, and equine-assisted therapy. Residents participate in 35 hours per week of group and family treatment.

The team includes experienced psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, therapists, social workers, and nurses. Sheppard Pratt was among the first facilities to implement transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to address depression that does not respond to standard treatments, and research continues on site.

Founded in 1853, Sheppard Pratt has stayed committed to its mission, values, and Quaker tradition. Principles rooted in Quaker testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality shape how the organization operates. Its founder, Moses Sheppard, was strongly motivated by social justice, and the charter for the asylum was approved in 1853. After his death in 1857, Sheppard directed his entire fortune to the construction of The Sheppard Asylum. His bequest of $571,441.41 was the largest donation to mental health at that time. The Sheppard Asylum opened on December 6, 1891, after 34 years of building, in Towson, Maryland, on a 340-acre campus that still remains today.
