Deaf Bridges to Recovery (DBR) is a CaringWorks initiative and stands as the only program of its type in the southeastern United States. The 70-bed program is based in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, and is delivered through Hope House, another residential program operated by CaringWorks. DBR helps participants sustain sobriety, respond to mental health needs, and build practical tools needed to live independently. Services include safe housing for up to two years, an individualized treatment plan, care coordination, medication management, individual counseling, referrals to additional supports as required, and other related assistance. Participants receive three meals each day, attend psychoeducational classes such as anger management, problem solving, and relapse prevention, and benefit from case management that can support job readiness, help with legal or court-related needs, access to GED programming, and more. DBR also offers a private room with a flashing light, a dedicated deaf lounge with a television that includes closed captioning, ASL and literacy education, deaf NA meetings, and assistive technology. DBR’s services are delivered by deaf and hard-of-hearing professionals who are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and trained in evidence-based practices.
Eligibility for DBR requires that applicants are male, at least 18 years old, low-income, experiencing homelessness, in need of substance use treatment and recovery support, and are deaf or hard of hearing. Georgia residents receive priority, though the program welcomes qualified individuals from any state. Before enrollment, each applicant meets with the DBR team for pre-screening and assessment to confirm program fit. If the applicant is approved as a suitable candidate, they must submit documentation including a letter verifying homelessness, tuberculosis verification, and rapid plasma reagin verification.
