About AWA Miami

Adolescent Wellness Academy (AWA) provides structured outpatient care tailored to adolescents and teens ages 13 to 17, with a focus on mental health treatment and related challenges such as substance use disorder (SUD). Programs at AWA combine evidence-based approaches delivered through individualized 1:1 counseling and group therapy, along with hands-on creative and experiential activities. Academic assistance is also included, and the overall model remains centered on the family. A multidisciplinary team collaborates closely with each teen and their support system, guiding them toward greater resilience, improved insight into themselves, and stronger connections with peers and loved ones in a setting designed to promote healing.

AWA’s therapeutic day program represents its highest level of care and is also referred to as a partial hospitalization program (PHP). This option follows a schedule similar to residential treatment while allowing clients to continue living at home. Treatment runs for 8 hours each day, 5 days per week. The program includes 1 hour of individual therapy and 4 hours of evidence-based group programming weekly. It also incorporates 2–3 hours of on-site academic support with an education coordinator so teens can stay on track with school. Clients receive a weekly psychiatric evaluation to monitor progress and update treatment recommendations as needed. Nutritional guidance and support are provided when required, and meals such as lunch, snacks, and beverages are available daily.

Most teens remain in PHP for about 4 to 12 weeks before moving to an intensive outpatient program (IOP). The IOP is an afternoon program for teens dealing with milder symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, behavioral concerns, or SUD. Sessions take place for 3 hours per day, 3 to 5 days per week, and typically include two group meetings each day. The program also offers experiential and creative options such as music, yoga, and mindfulness, along with dedicated study areas for completing schoolwork. Teens and their families commonly participate in IOP for 10 to 16 weeks.

At AWA, family participation is strongly encouraged because parents and loved ones play an essential role in recovery. The center offers a weekly parent support group, monthly multi-family support meetings, and clinical support to address crisis needs. Families may also join ongoing family therapy sessions as part of the treatment plan.
