Located in Perth, Shalom House is known for being “Australia's largest and toughest rehab.” The Christian, residential program is built around the personal recovery journey of its founder from methamphetamine addiction. Treatment typically runs for 12 months or more and also addresses co-occurring issues such as anxiety, depression, domestic violence, and gambling. Shalom House is accredited through the Alcohol and Other Drug Human Services Standard (AODHSS), and it attracts frequent media attention.
The facility offers 140 beds, with separate accommodation for men and women. Shalom House accepts both men and women of all faiths, and it serves people across all Australian states and territories. They take roughly one out of every 20 applicants. Court referrals are not accepted, and they do not admit individuals who are currently in prison.
Prospective clients must read the information on Shalom House’s website and review the terms there before proceeding. The cost is $500 AUD per week. Those receiving Centrelink support can access a reduced rate of $300. The center does not use insurance or government funding, though it accepts donations such as food and clothing.
Treatment follows an abstinence-based “cold turkey” approach. Smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere on the property, and residents are not allowed to discuss smoking or vaping while onsite. Medication is generally not allowed, but exceptions may be granted for anti-psychotic medications if approved by one of their psychiatrists.
The program includes attending church services for residents of all faiths on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Friday services are Pentecostal-style, Saturday services are non-denominational, and Sunday services take place at different churches across the Perth area each week. Residents may also take part in occasional outings, such as visits to John Forest National Park.
Shalom House follows a five-stage treatment pathway that includes work or volunteering. Stage 1 is detox for around three months, during which clients cannot use their phones or leave the property. Stage 2 focuses on planning a person’s life after leaving Shalom House and runs for about 12 weeks, overlapping with Stage 1. After finishing Stage 2, clients may leave on Fridays at 5 p.m. and return by 5 p.m. the following Sundays, provided family collects them. Stage 3 permits residents to work offsite, obtain a cellphone, and leave the property, with a curfew at 8:30 p.m. Stage 4 emphasizes building community relationships and mentoring newer residents, and the curfew becomes 10:30 p.m. Stage 5 is centered on preparing for post-discharge life and includes random drug testing.
Also confirm the facility is licensed by Delaware. If you are withdrawing from alcohol or benzodiazepines, ask about medical detox; do not stop suddenly on your own.
Shalom House Perth did not report which payment types it accepts. If you have Medicaid, ask whether the facility accepts your Delaware Medicaid plan or can refer you to one that does. Most private plans must cover substance use treatment on terms comparable to other medical care under federal parity law.
