About Sandstone Care

Sandstone Care in Boulder, CO provides treatment for substance use disorders and mental health challenges for adolescents ages 13-17 and young adults ages 18-30. The center offers structured, research-informed programming tailored to different age groups, focusing on the distinct concerns that each stage of life can bring. Care is delivered through a day treatment program and an intensive outpatient program (IOP), located about 15 minutes from Boulder and roughly 20 minutes from downtown Denver. For young women, a nearby sober living option is available.

At Sandstone Care, the therapist-to-client ratio is 1:8, helping clinicians deliver individualized support to clients and also to their families. Outpatient services address substance use and co-occurring conditions, including depression, trauma-related symptoms, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Across each level of care, participants receive 1:1 counseling, group therapy, group-based activities, and psychoeducational sessions. Treatment commonly incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Additional wellness supports may include mindfulness, art and music therapy, and nutrition counseling.

The day treatment track includes therapy for 5 hours per day, 5 days each week, and it usually runs for about 4 weeks, adjusted to meet individual needs. After completing day treatment, clients are encouraged to transition into the intensive outpatient program (IOP), which provides approximately 12 hours of weekly treatment across 3-4 days. Adolescents and young adults also receive academic and vocational assistance through a dedicated advisor who supports school progress, employment goals, and career exploration. Medication-assisted treatment is used when appropriate to help manage certain mental health symptoms.

Sandstone Care’s licensed clinicians, medical staff, therapists, and academic team work with parents and loved ones throughout the treatment process. Families can participate in weekly multi-family groups to gain support and learn from others. Every two weeks, individual family therapy sessions are offered to help families better understand addiction and mental health disorders, strengthen recovery skills, set healthy boundaries, and improve emotional communication. When treatment ends, clients continue with an active alumni community that meets regularly and helps them connect to local resources.
