About Evolve Adolescent Behavioral Health

Evolve Walnut Creek is a residential treatment program offering individualized care using solution-oriented, evidence-based approaches for as many as six teens ages 12 to 17 at any given time. The center is located in spacious, upscale homes where residents can choose private or shared bedrooms. Teens receive wholesome meals prepared by a chef, access to computers for two hours of school Monday through Friday, and a variety of on-site amenities, including a pool, fitness area, and outdoor lounge. The program is licensed and supervised 24/7, creating a structured and supportive therapeutic setting designed to encourage healing.

Evolve’s dual-diagnosis services focus on mental health, substance use, and co-occurring conditions through a combination of group and family therapy, motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). During admissions, an experienced clinical team conducts a detailed assessment to develop a customized treatment plan for each teen. Plans are reviewed and adjusted regularly based on progress and evolving goals.

The program addresses a broad range of mental health and substance-related disorders, including anxiety, depression, self-harm or suicidal thoughts, PTSD and other trauma-related concerns, bipolar and other mood disorders, gender dysphoria, eating disorders, borderline and other personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), psychosis, and challenges with mood or behavior regulation.

For substance use disorders, Evolve provides treatment for alcohol, cannabis, opioids, prescription medications (including stimulants and sedatives), misuse involving hallucinogens and stimulants, and tobacco-related concerns. The dual-diagnosis setting is equipped to support teens facing both mental health and substance use difficulties at the same time. Treatment is also available for teens with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) when a co-occurring mental health or substance use issue is present.

Alongside evidence-based clinical care, Evolve incorporates experiential therapies guided by clinicians and qualified instructors. Equine-assisted therapy can help reduce resistance and lower barriers by working with horses. Art therapy offers a calm way to manage stress, strengthen self-awareness, and process difficult experiences. Expressive options such as music and dance therapy may support mood, general wellbeing, and body image, while drama therapy can strengthen communication, relationships, and empathy. Surf therapy is led by accredited instructors and uses surfing as a hands-on experience to build executive functioning, practice social skills, and develop stress-management strategies. Nature-based work through hiking helps promote a healthier self-view, support more constructive interaction with others and the environment, and improve day-to-day coping. Weekly yoga sessions and fitness center activities are also part of the program. Teens may participate in regular outings such as beach trips, movies, hiking trails, miniature golf, and visits to museums to encourage engagement with the wider world and reward progress and effort.

Families and teens work with a caring clinical team that delivers individual, group, and family therapy. DBT is a core focus, with teens attending four DBT groups each week and receiving programming aligned with DBT principles. CBT is used to address depression, anxiety, substance use, and eating disorders by helping teens shift unhelpful thought patterns. MI helps meet teens where they are, clarify personal goals and values, and strengthen motivation for lasting behavior change. Mindfulness is integrated across treatment to support present-moment awareness, acceptance without judgment, and a move away from automatic, unhelpful responses.

Additional tools for substance use and co-occurring disorders include seeking safety, relapse prevention, anger management, meditation, and life skills development. The center also offers family therapy and family support groups to ensure relatives remain meaningfully involved in the treatment process and in partnership with care providers.

Evolve Walnut Creek is accredited by Joint Commission and CARF and accepts most major insurance plans.
