About Newport Academy

Newport Academy San Rafael uses a whole-person model of care for teenagers ages 12-18 who are struggling with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and related concerns such as substance use, self-harm, and disordered eating. Through its partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP), teens receive both clinical support and academic programming, with services designed to involve and assist the entire family. The schedule also includes adventure-based activities, such as hiking outings around local coastal parks and Bay Area beaches along the Marin County shoreline.

Programming runs throughout the day, five days per week. The PHP is intended for teens who need significant support but do not require a residential setting. It combines individual, group, family, and experiential therapies along with an accredited education component. The IOP suits young people who are gaining momentum in recovery, providing ongoing care five afternoons each week after school.

Treatment at Newport Academy San Rafael focuses on teens’ mental, physical, social, emotional, and educational well-being through compassionate guidance, clinical skill, and consistent acceptance. Providers use evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and attachment-focused family therapy to strengthen parent-child bonds and improve communication. Teens also participate in yoga and meditation, creative outlets like art and music, and outdoor adventure therapy.

Newport’s care is tailored to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ youth by helping them build confidence, develop practical skills for navigating daily life, and strengthen peer and community relationships. The center’s clinicians and staff are trained to respond to the distinct mental health pressures LGBTQ+ teens may encounter. Newport Academy has also partnered with the Trevor Project, a leading organization in LGBTQ+ advocacy and research, to deliver specialized training for its staff.
