Key Healthcare provides multiple levels of support for adolescents aged 13–17 dealing with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges. The center’s mission is to help teens regain stability by building on their strengths, so they can move toward a healthier, more confident future and a greater sense of well-being. Key offers a 45–60 day residential program located in a comfortable luxury setting in Malibu. This option is designed for teens whose mental health and substance use needs cannot be effectively handled through outpatient services. Treatment can address issues such as anxiety, depression, concerns related to gender or sexual orientation, low self-esteem, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
While in the program, Key includes online schooling for each teen. The daily routine typically begins with about three hours of education, followed by counseling sessions. After school, teens take part in individual and/or group counseling, along with family-focused programming. By using evidence-based therapeutic approaches, teens are supported in understanding their feelings, improving relationships, and practicing healthier coping strategies. Key also incorporates holistic activities such as yoga, surf therapy, hiking, and art therapy to help relieve stress and strengthen self-awareness.
For teens who do not require inpatient care, Key Healthcare also provides intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP). These programs create a structured therapeutic setting, either during the full day or in the evening for a few hours, depending on individual needs. Along with one-on-one counseling and group therapy, teens learn recovery skills and join weekly family sessions to reinforce progress before transitioning to lower levels of care. Key also offers an extended care program for teen boys that combines PHP with sober living. In this track, residents work on practical life skills, strengthen supportive relationships, attend daily 12-Step meetings, and take part in household responsibilities and fitness activities to support long-term sobriety.
