Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medications for opioid use disorder cut the risk of overdose death roughly in half, according to research summarized by the National Academies.
- Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Sublocade): since 2023, any clinician with a DEA registration can prescribe it.
- Methadone: only dispensed at federally certified opioid treatment programs.
- Naltrexone (Vivitrol): a monthly injection that blocks opioids; also used for alcohol use disorder. Requires being opioid-free first.
