Levels of Addiction Treatment

Treatment providers usually match people to a level of care using the ASAM Criteria, which look at withdrawal risk, medical and mental health needs, readiness and home environment.
| Level | What it involves | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Medical detox | 24-hour medical monitoring through withdrawal | 3 to 7 days |
| Residential | Live on site, daily therapy | 28 to 90 days |
| Partial hospitalization (PHP) | About 20 hours a week of treatment, home at night | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Intensive outpatient (IOP) | 9 or more hours a week | 6 to 12 weeks |
| Outpatient | 1 to 2 sessions a week | Months, as needed |
